My first Hillman is my current and only Hillman.

I started work at the age of 14 years, selling petrol for my Uncle at the Shell Service Station Brompton (now an empty block). I was fortunate to have an Uncle who took an interest in me.  He apprenticed me as a motor mechanic, and over the years, trained me to manage, and then eventually sold the site to me.

How does this all relate to my first Hillman?  In 1967 a charming couple, Mr. & Mrs McLean, came to the service station driving a 1965 Hillman Minx which they had bought from the show room.  They had under warranty been taking it back for servicing.  They asked if I could service their car, and I took over the maintenance, and servicing for the next 25 years.

When Mrs McLean could drive no more (she was over 80 and had health issues) she offered the car to me at RAA valuation – and so I became the owner of a Hillman.  Mrs McLean gave me all the original books and papers.  I do not think they ever allowed any one to travel in the back seat of the car.

I kept the car for some years at Murray Bridge, and joined the Murray Bridge Automobile Club.

At an All British Day, I was approached by Ian Kitto, and asked to join the Hillman Club.  Joining the Hillman Car Club has given both Lyn and me, many enjoyable social times.  We have made good friends within the club, and are looking forward to many more years with the club.
