HCC of South Australia member Ken Kite is really flying on his trip from Adelaide to the red centre of Australia in his 1956 Mk VIII Hillman utility and caravan.

Ken left Adelaide on Monday morning at about 10.00am and arrived in Port Augusta, 312 km away, at 2.30 pm.  The little ute still has its commercial low gearing, and Ken says that its best cruising speed with the 'van on behind is 48-50 mph.  Petrol consumption is a little under 20 miles per gallon, and as there is only a 7.5 gallon tank, and l-o-n-g distances between service stations, Ken carries three 20 litre jerrycans and has to refuel from them fairly often.

The little caravan is about 8 feet long, 6 feet wide, about 4.5 feet high with a small roof section able to be raised to give some headroom.  The caravan has Morris Mini Minor wheels.  Ken spent all Tuesday in Port Augusta, and headed north again on Wednesday, when he covered 480 km, another 510 km yesterday and hopes to do the remaining 350 km to Ayers Rock today (Friday).

He has had no troubles at all so far.  More updates when I hear from Ken again.

Regards, Ern Broughton
