Although produced from 1945 to 1947, this model range is consistently referred to in contemporary Rootes publications as "1946 Model."  With the introduction of the Mark III in 1949, Rootes retrospectively designated the 1946 model as "Mark I."  Various prominent authors have used the word "Phase" instead of "Mark" – although we have been unable to find that term in any Rootes literature.  The final word on the subject is found in the Vehicle Identification Schedule, published by Rootes Motors (Parts) Limited in November 1966, where the model is described as "Mark I."

The Mark I saloon is essentially the same as the 1940 model because wartime manufacturing priorities allowed very little development.  The minor changes are described in the 1958 edition of "Glass's Car Check Book" :
an anti-sway bar, cone guides for starting handle, cast iron brake drums and jack brackets incorporated in bumper over-riders.  Early Mark I models had a vertical air cleaner while later ones were horizontal.  A coupe was added in May 1946.  Serial number started at 1710001 for the saloon.
